“New year, new me” is the motto most people live by as one year gives way to the next. But are your priorities really in the right place? In 2019, it’s time to make sleep your new BFF. Most New Year’s resolutions revolve around things like eating better, losing weight, and achieving financial goals, but sleep does not usually make the list. Despite the importance of a good night’s sleep, getting a little shut-eye often gets pushed aside in favor of more exciting activities.
Even if you feel fine on five or six hours of sleep, you’re probably not catching enough Zs to keep your body running at its max. If you’re one of the 40% of people who make resolutions to do better in the new year, sleep should be your number one priority.
We all love sleep, but almost no one gets enough of it. The average person only sleeps 6.8 hours a night, despite a recommended seven to nine hours for adults. A recent study found that a whopping one-third of those surveyed admit to sleeping less than six hours per night – an increase of 15% over the last 15 years.
While it’s possible to perform adequately on six or fewer hours of sleep for some people, doing so on a long-term basis isn’t sustainable. And while claiming you can sleep when you’re dead may sound like a cool claim, everything from mental clarity to job performance suffers when you’re short on sleep.

Stress and anxiety run the show for most adults, from financial stressors at home to performance pressure at work. Unfortunately, failing to get enough shut-eye only makes things worse.
