Odd, we know. But, the chemical makeup of sodium hypochlorite—the active bleaching agent in chlorine bleach—is generally the culprit behind that dingy, yellowy cast that ends up blanketing your beloved (not so) white bed sheets.
Here’s what you should do instead:
Two effective, eco-friendly, and natural alternatives to bleach are baking soda and vinegar.
For best results with your white sheets, add baking soda during the wash cycle and vinegar during the rinse cycle.
Both baking soda and vinegar will naturally soften your sheets. Because they’re natural, they won’t clog or harm your washing machine. If anything, they’ll help to keep your machine clean and odorless.

A lot of us tend to believe that washing our white bed sheets in hot water and drying them on high heat will magically make them whiter.
Well, this isn’t always the case when it comes to cleaning bed linens—not the white ones, at least.
Sure, hot water is great for lifting ground-in stains, but it also wears down the brightness of your fabrics. And if you’re washing your white sheets with colored items, using hot water is almost guaranteed to cause the color transfer.
Whenever possible, you should wash your white sheets in cold water. And for the times when you feel like some heat is necessary, use warm water. But, steer clear of hot water washes for the most part.
Cold water will keep your white bed linens looking brighter longer.
Whenever possible, hang your linens in the sun to dry. Exposing your linens to direct sunlight allows them to experience the advantages of sun bleaching. Sun bleaching is exactly what it sounds like: bleaching by way of the sun.
If you have some hard, set-in stains in your white sheets, it may take drying your sheets in the sun two or three times before you see the results you’re looking for.

At least once per month, consider pre-washing your white bed sheets in a baking soda + water solution.
Pre-washing will aid in deodorizing your bed linens and lifting any stains that may have accumulated over time. Depending on how many and how deep the stains are, you may want to allow your sheets to pre-wash in the baking soda solution overnight.
For best results, Bedface recommends mixing three parts water to one part baking soda.
